Homemade Pumpkin Spice Creamer Recipe and How to Make a Natural PSL

This article is my best recipe for homemade pumpkin pie spice AND my pumpkin spice latte mix…so you can make your own PSL at the drop of a hat! Save money, be healthier, and save time….what’s not to love?

It’s Fall, Ya’ll! And that means tons of pumpkin everywhere, including the notoriously loved or loathed PSL (pumpkin spice latte) in all the major coffee shops. Amen!

It’s time for a seasonal fall pleasure…And you can make it yourself: Homemade Pumpkin Spice Creamer!

Even though we live in a small (super tiny, actually) town where there are no coffee shops that I’m aware of that serve a true city-like pumpkin spice latte, it’s still the season where I find myself wanting one.

Bad.

Like it’s a craving!

After a lifetime of living in a big city, where there was a Starbucks or other glam coffee shop on every corner, the PSL was one of my favorite harbingers of the fall season! And now I can’t find one anywhere…. (Little teardrop & tiny violins)

But, THAT’S OK!

When you do not have the conveniences of city life around you, you tend to get very self-sufficient, creative…and healthier! Right?

For example, when I couldn’t just run to the grocery store when we lived off-grid, I made my own recipe for Healthy Spiced Hot Cocoa—-and it’s totally the bomb!

I am happy to share with you my recipe for the perfectly spiced Pumpkin Spice Latte that is actually HEALTHY! And good for you!

Trust me: You don’t need all the chemicals, sugar, or toxins contained in that PSL from the shop down the street. You can make your own additives at home, and whip up that healthy latte yourself in a snap!

First, you need to be sure you have the right spices.

I know there are a million and one homemade pumpkin pie spice mix recipes out there, but to make things simple, I thought I’d just share my own with you. You can, of course, make your own adjustments to suit your own tastes. I’m definitely a cinnamon girl!

I love hot coffee drinks, and seriously….does anything beat a PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte)?

I love hot coffee drinks, and seriously….does anything beat a PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte)?

So, get this made first:

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice Blend Recipe:

6 tbsp ground cinnamon

4 tsp ground ginger

4 tsp nutmeg

5 tsp ground allspice (or 3 tsp cloves and 1 tsp allspice)

1 tsp ground cardamom

Mix these spices all together really well in a jar. I like to make a rather large amount because I’ll use it liberally in my coffee, in my cooking, and even sprinkled on my oatmeal. It doesn’t really last very long around here.

I love having pre-mixed spices I make myself ready to go in the cupboard because they are generally LOTS fresher as well as being far less expensive in the long run. AND, I can make the taste the way I want it to be.

NOTE: If you don’t want to make this spice blend yourself, you can buy it from Amazon, right here.

NOTE #2: If you want to purchase bulk spices (which I recommend because they are usually fresher and less expensive) that are super high quality, I love to shop at Starwest Botanicals. They have EVERYTHING, from herbs to spices to tea blends, and so much more. Their shipping is super fast too.

OK—now you’re ready to make the actual real pumpkin spice creamer I use to make my pumpkin spice latte in the mornings. I should tell you now, that I do make this year round….because that is how much I adore it.

This grouping shows the xylitol—- And normally I use ground ginger too.

PSL Creamer Recipe

1 cup heavy whipping cream or organic half and half (or any dairy substitute such as almond milk, etc.)

Sweetener of your choice: Erythritol or Stevia (1 tsp or to taste), Xylitol (1 tbsp or to taste), honey, cane sugar, maple sugar crystals (my current favorite) etc.

5 tbsp organic pumpkin puree

3 tsp of the pumpkin pie spice above or to taste (I tend to use a lot more)

1 tsp or to taste vanilla extract (Click to see how to make it yourself, along with a rather gruesome folktale about vanilla, if you’re interested!)

Blend or mix well together, store in the fridge for up to two weeks. But I bet it won’t last that long!

To Use:

Serve one to three tablespoons in your coffee, tea, chai, or other ways you’d use your pumpkin spiced cream!

Now, this creamer won’t have the chemical taste of the “real” PSL you’ll buy in a coffee shop, but that’s ok! Trust me, you’ll end up liking this better, and it is actually good for you. The spices involved are not just artificial flavorings…they all have exceptional health benefits.

You can google these, but some of the bennies include helping you regulate your blood sugar, helping with digestion, and supporting circulation. Chemicals just don’t do that. Plants DO!

A tip on the dairy—-

I always look at the ingredients. I personally avoid carageenan and try to buy dairy products that have as few ingredients as possible. If you can find raw milk in your community, that’s what I’d personally use….but this is up to you.

And that’s it!

Easy. Money saving. Time saving. Delicious. Healthy.

Wow—-Why on earth would anyone get one of those city drinks? Amen!

One for you! And one for a friend!

One for you! And one for a friend!

Final Thoughts on Making Your Own PSL (Pumpkin Spiced Latte)

First of all, this creamer has REAL pumpkin puree in it! Now how can you beat that?

Second, it WILL save you some significant change. Consider that the price for a PSL in the city is running a minimum of around $5. Although I haven’t actually priced the cost out, I’ll bet your PSL made with this homemade version of the creamer is less than fifty cents, depending on the coffee and dairy you’re using!

Third, it’s ready to go! You just make your coffee, shake up the creamer, pour the amount in, and stir. DONE!

You can enjoy that PSL before you even leave your home!

Finally, it’s pretty darn good for you, especially if you leave off the whipped cream.

And if you are wondering what you’ll do with that extra pumpkin? I use it up in my homemade pumpkin soup. It’s the most amazingly delicious recipe in the fall, my friend. I hope you’ll give it a try!

Let me know your thoughts in the comments! I’d love to hear from you, and I hope you enjoy a natural PSL this season (or, heck! Any season!)!

Hugs, Health, and Self-Reliance,

Heidi
